I am looking forward to these books in order to work toward my MCPD

First to be released is Web Applications Development with Microsoft .NET Framework 4 by Tony Northrup and Mike Snell. Tony also wrote Microsoft® .NET Framework Application Development Foundation, Second edition which was very helpful for the 70-536 exam.

The 2nd book is MCTS Self-Paced Training Kit (Exam 70-511): Windows Application Development with Microsoft .NET Framework 4. I used a previous book by Matthew Stoecker in preparation for my WPF 3.5 exam and found it very useful.

What’s new in SharePoint 2010 for Developers

Windows SharePoint Foundation and Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010 are the next generation of the SharePoint product.

This talk will give a whirlwind overview of some of the new and improved functionality in SharePoint such as the Fluent UI, Services Architecture, Sand-boxed solutions, and much much more.

We will then look at how the tools including Visio, SharePoint Designer, and Visual Studio.NET have been improved to support the developers and the application life cycle management.

Game development with XNA: Beyond the basics

This month we will will have JD Trask talking about XNA.

John-Daniel Trask will be presenting on game development with XNA. Building on previous presentations which provided a cursory look at XNA, this presentation will cover how to start building a modern 3D game, discuss how shaders work (hint: they are the backbone of how modern games look so amazing) and algorithms to aid in improving game performance. Microsoft are putting considerable effort behind XNA with it being officially supported on the new Windows Mobile 7, XBOX 360 and the PC so come along, have some pizza, check out what you can do and have some fun exploring the possibility of developing your very own indie games! If you missed the first session John-Daniel presented, have no fear, ninja skills are not required!

Joe Newton will speak to the North Shore User Group on the 19th November regarding Agile development.

Joe is the Practice Principal of Enterprise applications with Intergen.

He will also give us some tips on simple changes to our work environment that will give immediate benefit.

Tonight is the inaugural North Shore .Net User Group meeting.

Adam Cogan will be speaking on VS2010 and TFS server and he has a tonne of User Group experience so it should be very interesting. More later.

Auckland Code Camp

Attended the Auckland Code Camp last Sunday.

Interesting talks regarding new dot net languages that appear to be gaining prominence in the upcoming Visual Studio / .Net framework release. Particularly Iron Ruby and F# demonstrations by Ivan (http://hestia.typepad.com/)

Behaviour Driven Development- Owen (http://bgeek.net/) and Unity/Prism by Sky Sigal gave me some more challenges regarding how to create software.

Overall, lots of learning
